Wide Open Spaces #3 - The Letter Kills
The idea for today is this: the letter kills; the Spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:4-6
The law (letter) tells you what’s wrong with you. Life tells you what’s possible for you. Law tells you where you are wrong. Life tells you where you’ve been made right.
2 Corinthians 3:7-11
Are you living by the letter or by life? Condemnation or affirmation?
The way you think about God will shape the way you think about all of life. If you think God is down on you, then you think He’s down on everybody and everything. Get set free from feeling like God is down on you! Get set free in realizing that the law of the Spirit of life lifts you!
There is a huge difference between a condemned heart and a heart full of life.
So how can you tell the difference between conviction and condemnation? Conviction is specific; condemnation is vague. Conviction will make you want to run to God; condemnation will make you want to hide from God. So how do we overcome condemnation?
1. Look out
1 John 3:18-21
Look out. Reach out. You’ve touched reality in God when you’ve started loving on people.
When you start the “what am I doing wrong” game, your heart and mind start doing all kinds of weird things. Look out and reach out to overcome condemnation!
2. Look up
You don’t overcome condemnation by performance but by faith.
Faith in your performance will put you under condemnation because you are always falling short. The way to overcome condemnation is to embrace your position in Christ. You have to believe your way out of condemnation!
We’re often trying to climb up onto a platform that God has already placed us on. We’re trying to be righteous when He’s made us righteous. We’re trying to win His approval when He’s already given it.
Receive the abundance of grace. Receive the gift of righteousness!
